Veliko Tarnovo Region
Veliko Tarnovo is the capital of the Second Bulgarian Kingdom and the Asenevtsi dynasty in the Middle Ages. Here is the Museum of the Revival and the Constituent Assembly, located in the Old Konak – in this building, built by the legendary Bulgarian master Kolyo Ficheto, in 1879 the first Bulgarian constitution was adopted – the Tarnovo Constitution.
Veliko Tarnovo is twinned with the city of Poltava, Ukraine.
The district occupies 4.2% of the country’s territory and is divided into 10 municipalities: Veliko Tarnovo, Gorna Oryahovitsa, Lyaskovets, Elena, Zlataritsa, Pavlikeni, Polski Trambesh, Svishtov, Strazhitsa and Suhindol. The population is over 200 thousand people.
Education & Child Care
106 are the primary and secondary schools in the district – both general education and providing vocational training in transport, management, construction and geodesy, light industry.
There are 89 kindergartens in the district.
In the autumn of 1963 on the historical and picturesque hill “Sveta Gora” in Veliko Tarnovo opened its doors the first university outside the capital, which has patrons the holy brothers Cyril and Methodius. Inheriting the educational and cultural traditions of the famous Tarnovo Literary School from the fourteenth century, it has established itself as an authoritative higher school for the humanities and arts, as a prestigious educational and scientific center.
Health
13 large medical establishments on the territory of the district are in the register of the Ministry of Health. All types of general and specialized medical and outpatient health care are provided.
Industry & Jobs
One of the ten international transport corridors – MTK N 9 Helsinki-Moscow-Bucharest-Alexandroupolis passes through Veliko Tarnovo region. Corridor 9 connects Europe with Asia and the Middle East. It is a connection with MTK N 7 Danube River, MTK N 8 Adriatic-Black Sea and MTK N 4 in the section Sofia-Svilengrad. To the north, Veliko Tarnovo district has the Danube River as its border. Here is located the town of Svishtov with a river port, providing the connection of the district with the Central European countries through which the Danube River passes.
Industry is a major structural sector for the local economy with a leading role in a number of indicators. In the structure of the economy, the sectors “Trade and repair activities”, “Manufacturing industry” and “Transport, communications and electricity and gas distribution” have the largest contribution to the net sales revenues.
Agriculture is one of the priority sectors with a traditionally important place for the economy at both national and regional level. Crop production is widespread, with the largest share of cereals and industrial crops. Vegetable production has a long tradition in the region. The cultivation of herbs, essential oils and mushrooms, for which there are extremely favorable conditions, is established and developed in the area. The predominant way of raising animals is in private farms, but the farming method of animal husbandry is also necessary.
Veliko Tarnovo region offers excellent opportunities for tourism: remarkable natural resources; historical and cultural monuments and museums; unique architectural sites; many monasteries; bizarre relief; temperate climate; ecologically clean areas; mineral springs, hunting farms.
The labor exchange offers jobs for drivers, welders and formworkers, caregivers, breeders.
Cultural & Historical Heritage
There are over 140 cultural monuments of national importance in the district – 15% of all in the country. 67% of them are located in the municipality of Veliko Tarnovo.
The administrative center of Veliko Tarnovo was the capital of the medieval Bulgarian state. A memory of that time are the fortresses Tsarevets and Trapezitsa, the greatness of which is emphasized by the only on the Balkan Peninsula audio-visual performance “Tsarevgrad Tarnov – sound and light”. The preserved environment, as well as the ecologically clean agricultural production provide an opportunity for the development of one of the most attractive forms of tourism in our country “rural tourism” and “ecotourism”. Several wine centers in the area (Lyaskovets, Suhindol, Karaisen) attract supporters of the so-called. “Wine” tourism. The Museum of Horticulture and Viticulture with wine tastings in an authentic setting has been established in the town of Lyaskovets.
Near Veliko Tarnovo are the unique in its atmosphere and attractiveness sites – the museum reserve “Arbanassi”, Kapinovo Monastery “St. Nikolai Chudotvorets ”, the Transfiguration Monastery, and in Tarnovo itself – the famous Samovodska Bazaar of Crafts.
